Case No. 23-38-RD

Notice Issued: September 17, 2024

Nejla K. Lane, P 68737, Kyle, Texas

Suspension - 60 Days, Effective March 16, 2024

In a reciprocal discipline proceeding filed pursuant to MCR 9.120(C), the Grievance Administrator filed a certified copy of an order entered by the Supreme Court of Illinois suspending respondent from the practice of law in Illinois for nine months, with the suspension stayed after six months by a six-month period of probation, subject to conditions, dated January 17, 2023, and effective February 7, 2023.  See In re: Nejla Lane, Case No. M.R. 031402, Supreme Court of Illinois.

On May 11, 2023, an Order Regarding Imposition of Reciprocal Discipline was issued, giving the parties 21 days to inform the Board in writing (i) of any objection to the imposition of comparable discipline in Michigan based on the grounds set forth in MCR 9.120(C)(1); and (ii) whether a hearing was requested.  No objections were filed and neither party requested a hearing.  As a result, and pursuant to MCR 9.120(C)(6), the Board issued an order of suspension on July 6, 2023, that imposed a six‑month suspension as requested by the Grievance Administrator.

On August 3, 2023, respondent filed a motion for reconsideration of the Boards July 6, 2023 order, and counsel for the Grievance Administrator filed a response on August 17, 2023.  On October 17, 2023, the Board issued an amended order granting respondent's motion for reconsideration, vacating order of suspension, and referring to hearing panel for disposition and briefing order.

On February 23, 2024, Tri‑County Hearing Panel #4 ordered that respondent be reprimanded, effective March 16, 2024, and assessed costs in the amount of $1,527.05.  Counsel for the Grievance Administrator timely filed a petition for review on March 6, 2024.  After conducting review proceedings in accordance with MCR 9.118, on June 12, 2024, the Board issued an order increasing discipline from a reprimand to a 60-day suspension of respondents license to practice law in Michigan, effective March 16, 2024, the effective date of the order of reprimand issued by the panel on February 23, 2024.
